Bangladesh refutes reports of Sheikh Hasina avoiding meeting with Indian High Commissioner
This was hype created by a third party, media, and social media, a news report quoted a Bangladeshi government official as saying
The Bangladesh government has denied the reports of Indian High Commissioner Riva Ganguly Das not getting an appointment to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for four months. Besides, there was no formal request for a meeting made by the High Commissioner, said the Economic Times report.
“There is no question of not responding to High Commission request. Moreover, the Prime Minister is maintaining ‘social distancing’ due to corona outbreak. She is not having any direct meetings with foreigners,” a Bangladesh government source was quoted saying in report by The Economic Times.
In the recent weeks, there were media reports claiming Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s phone conversation with Sheikh Hasina and “deterioration” of Dhaka-Delhi relations as the reasons for the Indian High Commissioner not getting an appointment to meet the Bangladesh PM.
However, the claims were refuted by the Dhaka based sources and they said that the Bangladesh government has actively participated in several online programs organized by the High Commission of India in the last few months, as per the Economic Times report.
The Foreign Ministers and Railway ministers of both countries viewed the handover of 10 locomotives in a virtual program last week, said the report.
“The Indian High Commissioner met the Road Transportation & Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday,” the report added.
According to the Economic Times report quoting a local official statement given to a leading Bangladesh daily, this is a “hype created by a third party, media and social media.”
“The bilateral relationship has reached new heights because of the mutual cooperation, reliance, trust, and all other components between the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the local official added.
