Pakistan: Imran Khan asked me to file ‘fake’ case of terrorism against Sharif family, reveals former FIA chief
The former FIA DG was also asked to file a corruption case against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his family
Pakistani Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) former Director General Bashir Memon, in a recent interview, has accused Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan of forcing him to file a terrorism case against members of the Sharif family and Pakistan Muslim League (N) after a picture of the first lady was circulated on social media.
In an interview to the MJ TV channel of Pakistan, he said, “There was a photograph on social media of the first lady and I was asked to file a case of terrorism on its basis. The photograph was a normal one. How is this terrorism? There is a definition of terrorism in the constitution.”
The video of the interview was later posted on Twitter and is now doing rounds of social media.
The video is an excerpt of the interview taken by prominent Pakistani journalist Matiullah Jan. In the interview, Matiullah asked Bashir Memon about the further details.
Answering him, Memon said, “I was summoned to the ‘highest office’ of Pakistan and was told to file a case of terrorism and take action and I refused saying there is no law in the constitution under which I can do so.”
According to various Pakistani media reports, the former FIA DG was also asked to file a corruption case against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his whole family which he refused.
Giving the reasons for his refusal, Memon said, “There were two reasons. One, I didn’t have the inquiries. Second, this was the mandate of the provincial anti-corruption unit,” several Pakistani publications reported.
Bashir Memon had resigned as DG FIA in December last year in protest against the alleged pressure of PM Imran Khan to file fake lawsuits against opposition leaders, the Pakistani media reported. Memon resigned just days before his retirement.
PML-N Spokesperson Marriym Aurangzeb also accused PM Imran Khan of forcing and pressuring Memon to file cases against the Sharif family. She also demanded a case against Imran Khan under the sections of misuse of authority, Pakistani media reported.
